Log record

One JSON object per simulation step, one line per object, written by backend/logger.py through EpisodeRunner. The record is the contract between the backend, the console and the evaluation: the live console renders it as it arrives, replay streams it back, the inspector rebuilds the Jev request from it, and metrics.py computes every number from it. Nothing else is needed to reconstruct a run.

Change procedure

Change this page first, then build_record in backend/logger.py and the call in backend/episode.py, then the TypeScript mirror in frontend/src/types.ts. tests/test_logger.py holds PLAN_KEYS, the exact set of top-level keys, and fails when the two drift apart.

A real record

Step 23 of a shielded seed 0 run from the evaluation, trimmed where marked. The policy proposed LANE_LEFT with a vehicle 1.5 m behind in the target lane; Jev put the gap rule at 0.71, inside the band, the simulated operator denied, and IDLE ran.

Four of the five candidates were served from the cache that step, so there is a single exchange, for LANE_RIGHT. The other candidates' probabilities are in their checks; their requests were never sent.

Fields

Run and step identity

Field Type Meaning
run_id string <UTC stamp>_seed<N>_<on|off>, from make_run_id. Also the log file's stem under backend/logs/runs/.
episode int Episode index within the run. Always 0 today; the runner keeps the field for multi-episode runs.
step int Zero-based step index within the episode.
seed int The seed passed to env.reset.
source string The judge mode the run was made with, live or mock.
shield_on bool Whether the shield could intervene. false is shadow mode: the judge and checkers still ran.
thresholds {t_allow, t_block} The thresholds in force at this step. They can change mid-run from the console.

The scene before the action

Field Type Meaning
ego {lane, speed_mps, x_m} The ego vehicle. Lanes count from the left starting at 1; x_m is the longitudinal road coordinate.
vehicles list of {id, lane, x_m, speed_mps} Every other vehicle, 30 in the demo configuration. Ids are stable within an episode. This is the render snapshot the road view draws and interpolates.
zones list of {name, lane, start_m, end_m} Zones in force, in absolute road coordinates.
constraints list of {id, text, enabled, checker} Every rule in the store, enabled or not. checker is a checker id or null.

The snapshot is taken before env.step(), so it describes the state the decision was made in. The next record's snapshot shows where the action led.

Candidates

candidates holds all five actions in Q order, so candidates[0] is the proposal and rank equals the list index.

Field Type Meaning
action string LANE_LEFT, IDLE, LANE_RIGHT, FASTER or SLOWER.
rank int 0 is the policy's preferred action.
q float The DQN's Q-value, rounded to 4 places.
facts object The exact state sent to Jev for this candidate. Schema on the facts page.
sentences list of string The same facts as plain sentences.
checks list of {constraint_id, p_violation, ground_truth} One entry per rule that was enabled at this step. p_violation is Jev's answer (or 0.5 when unavailable); ground_truth is the checker's label, true, false, or null for a rule with no checker.

Rules disabled at this step appear in constraints but have no entry in any candidate's checks.

The decision

Field Type Meaning
decision string What the shield decided: allow, fallback or escalate. Logs written before Oct 17 may also hold all_blocked. In shadow mode always allow.
executed string The action that ran. For an escalation this is the proposal after approve, the fallback after deny, or the named candidate after an override.
fired_constraint string or null The rule with the highest probability on the proposed action. Present on allowed steps too; the console only highlights it when the decision was not allow.
escalated bool The operator was asked.
escalation_reason string or null uncertain when the proposal sat inside the band with a confidently safe fallback available; no_compliant_action when no candidate was confidently safe; null when the step did not escalate, always null in shadow mode.
human {decision, action, latency_ms, operator} or null The answer (approve, deny or override), the action named by an override (null otherwise), how long it took, and who answered: ui, simulated, approve or deny. A timeout in the console records deny with the full timeout as latency.
all_blocked bool The executed action came from the SLOWER / IDLE last resort through a denied or timed-out escalation.
fallback {action, kind} What deny would run, or did run, and how it was found: safe, least_bad or last_resort. Present on every step, including allowed and shadow-mode ones.
floor {applied, removed} The physics floor (Oct 17). removed lists the candidates whose time to collision ahead after the action was under the floor, in rank order; applied says whether they were actually taken out of the executable set, which is true with the shield on and a floor above 0. Absent in logs written before Oct 17.

The judge

Field Type Meaning
judge.model string The model id the API reported, or the configured one when nothing was sent.
judge.source string unavailable if any question had no judge, else live if any request was sent, else cache.
judge.latency_ms float Wall-clock for the whole step's check, including cache lookups.
judge.input_tokens int Summed over the requests sent this step. Cached answers add nothing.
judge.cost_usd float Tokens times the per-token price.
judge.questions object The question per constraint id, as sent, shared by every candidate.
judge.exchanges list One entry per request actually sent: action, source, latency_ms, asked (constraint ids in that request), request_id, response (the raw JSON, or null when unavailable).

The request body is not stored. It is {"model": judge.model, "state": candidates[i].facts, "questions": {id: judge.questions[id] for id in exchange.asked}}, which is exactly what the inspector's raw tab rebuilds.

Outcome

Field Type Meaning
reward float The environment reward for the executed action, rounded to 4 places. highway-env normalizes it onto 0 to 1, so a step without a crash reads 0.667 to 1.0; see the reward function.
crashed bool info["crashed"] after the step. A crash ends the episode.

Invariants

  • One record per step, in step order, flushed as soon as it is written.
  • candidates always has five entries in rank order; executed is one of them.
  • Every candidate has the same set of constraint_ids in checks, in the order of the enabled rules.
  • escalated is true exactly when human is not null, and exactly when escalation_reason is not null.
  • all_blocked implies fallback.kind == "last_resort" and executed == fallback.action, while decision stays escalate.
  • human.decision == "override" implies human.action is one of the candidates and equals executed.
  • floor.applied implies executed is not in floor.removed, unless floor.removed lists every candidate, in which case executed == "SLOWER" and decision == "fallback".
  • judge.exchanges is empty when every answer came from the cache.
  • shield_on == false implies decision == "allow" and executed == candidates[0].action.

Who reads it

Reader What it uses
Road view ego, vehicles, zones, executed, candidates[0].action, decision, crashed
Decision strip and status strip decision, executed, escalated, human, judge.source, judge.latency_ms
Inspector everything, including judge.questions and judge.exchanges
server.replay_metrics decision, escalation_reason, reward, crashed, human, the executed candidate's checks, judge.cost_usd
metrics.episode_metrics the above plus all_blocked, floor, judge.source, judge.latency_ms, judge.input_tokens, thresholds
metrics.collect_checks every candidate's checks with a non-null ground_truth, joined to constraints[].checker

Files

Producer Path
interlock run backend/logs/runs/<run_id>.jsonl, or --log
The console backend/logs/runs/<run_id>.jsonl, a new file per reset
interlock eval backend/logs/eval/<stamp>_<label>/seed<N>.jsonl

read_log(path) in backend/logger.py parses a file back into a list of records; replay and the eval report use it.

The TypeScript mirror

frontend/src/types.ts declares LogRecord with the same fields, plus Candidate, Check, Human, Judge, Exchange, JevQuestion, Ego, VehicleSnapshot, Zone, Constraint, Thresholds, EscalationReason and FallbackKind. questions and exchanges are optional there so older logs without them still replay.
